The Happy News is…declare a “Do-Nothing” Day. I met an old friend last week in Lenox, Iowa. As we were catching up on each other's lives and lamenting about the lack of time to stay in touch, she said, “why do we think we have to be so busy all the time?' “Yes”, I thought, “why do we?” I'm sure that when we're gone, the world will continue so I'll bet it won't stop if we just drop out of the rat race for a day. Even though there are times when we are apparently doing nothing (nothing constructive anyway) we are still thinking about work or chores we feel should be doing or feeling guilty about the work or chores we're not doing. To have a true “do-nothing” day you must first repeat out loud, “I am not in charge of the universe. I have the right to just BE. The world will continue to spin without me.” Then proceed to spend a day doing exactly nothing: no thinking about work or chores and no guilt about work or chores. Get a days worth of movies or music and assume the prone position on the sofa. A “do-nothing” day can be a good transition between seasons or after a particularly busy time at home or work. It will refresh you and you'll be ready to plunge back into the fray. There is the added benefit of teaching you how to enjoy just being....being still to watch an entire sunset, or swing in a hammock, or listen to children's chatter. To be able to really enjoy doing nothing, repeat frequently the following statement: “I am a human being, not a human doing.”
