Makeup FAQ's

Question: "How can I tell if it's time to throw away my old cosmetics and makeup? "
Answer: Cosmetics - both skin care and makeup -aren't meant to grow old with you. "Products are developed to last a year or two," says Peter Pugliese, M.D., a skin physiologist in Reading, Pennsylvania. However, contamination can occur at any time, since makeup is always in contact with germ-prone areas like your eyes, mouth and fingers. In general, always toss anything that has changed color or consistency or has a bad odor. Otherwise, use these guidelines to assess the shelf life of common beauty products.
• Most powders, concealers and lip balms are anhydrous (they don't contain water), so they can last for a couple of years, says Dr. Pugliese.
• Cleansers and moisturizers often contain fatty acids, which can turn rancid quickly. Toss after six months.
• Multiuse products such as 3-in-1 sticks and creams can spread germs from lips to eyes and cheeks. Wipe the surface before switching areas, and discard or replace after six months.
• Pencils can last several years unless you wet the tip with saliva or water. To be safe, sharpen before each use.
• Mascara should be tossed after three months without fail. The tube is a breeding ground for bacteria," says Dr. Pugliese.
• Foundations can last up to a year if you keep your fingers away from the bottle. Instead, use a sponge to apply.
• Store cosmetics in a cool, dry place outside the bathroom to extend their shelf life.

Wishing you Christmas Happiness
Another year has passed and Christmas will be here soon. I just want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for all the readers of my newsletter and all the customers of Your 21st Century Avon Lady. It has been my best year ever with Avon. My President’s Club, Mrs. Albee figurine, is already sitting on my shelf. And it’s all because of you… not just because you buy Avon from me but because you inspire me to share the Avon products and opportunity with more people. Our little family has grown a lot this year and we’ve had some growing pains too. I have a solid group of new Avon representatives in my unit. I have twice as many customers as I had last year, and probably twice as many readers of The Happy News. I get such a lift each time sit down to write for you all. (one of my childhood dreams was to be a writer) It’s a real boost to know that there are people who enjoy this little project of mine.
Here is my Happiness wish for you this holiday season and all through 2009…that you will come to know with all your heart that your happiness is already within you…you carry it with you all the time, it’s as close as your thoughts and prayers. Focus on the things that will make you happy, explore ways you can contribute to the happiness of others and more and more happiness will flow into your life. Welcome it with the open arms of gratitude. Share some with others and you will always have abundance “…a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap”.
Happy Holidays Everyone!

Product Reviews:
I have two great products to share with you. First is the Beyond Color Lip Conditioner. Wear it under your lipstick or just by itself to keep your lips in good shape this winter. It’s still available to order a Beyond Color Lipstick and a Lip Conditioner for only $6.99. This is Karen K.’s new favorite product!
The second is ….Avon Naturals….. shower gels, body sprays and body lotions. I think these are very under-rated by Avon Customers. Everyone needs a set in their favorite fragrance ….because even if you don’t want to use them as your daily personal care products, these are great for days when you’re staying in, or doing casual activities or you just want something light and refreshing. Right now Avon is featuring the Blackberry and Vanilla which I love! I use the shower gel daily , the body lotion occasionally and the body spray whenever I feel like it (sometimes if I didn’t wear it for my daytime fragrance, I spray the sheets with it before I jump in bed. Great aroma therapy!) Order a set now to enjoy and then coming in Campaign 5 you’ll be ready to pamper yourself with a new fragrance for spring (pomegranate and mango)! I loved it in the preview scratch ‘n sniff and a set will come with the cutest little bag….everyone will want one….especially us retro girls!

Avon Naturals:

Never buy Avon Naturals at full price…..call me and I’ll let you know what campaign has the best deal on the Avon Naturals that you want. These Fragrances are always available: Cucumber Melon, Lavender/Chamomile, Peach, and Vanilla. Available this winter: Blackberry/Vanilla and Strawberry/Guava. Coming this spring: Pomegranate/Mango .

Finding Real PEACE at Christmas

“ The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes from within the souls of men when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells Wakan-Tanka (The Divine), and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us. This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this. The second peace is that which is made between two individuals, and the third is that which is made between two nations. But above all you should understand that there can never be peace between nations until there is first known that true peace which is within the souls of men."

If you are stressing about all the things on your "to do" list this month, here are some quick fixes that can improve your outlook in the short term and your health in the long term. Give yourself a gift and take a few minutes to try some of them.

Sing. Singing your way to work releases physical tension, oxygenates the blood, exercises your muscles, and liberates suppressed emotions. (for more about the benefits of singing click here http://thehappynewscde.blogspot.com/ .)

Look into the eyes of someone you love. The brain chemical oxytocin is produced during bonding experiences. This hormone increases trust, according to a study in Nature.

Hug someone. A brain team from the University of North Carolina stu died the effects of hugging in 38 couples and found that hugs reduce blood pressure, which cuts the risk of heart disease.

Eat chocolate. Just a little, left to melt slowly in your mouth while you saturate your taste buds, will make you happy and even boost your immune system. (I just learned of a chocolate bar that's filled with nutrients to help improve your memory and focus. I've ordered some and I'll let you know what I think!)

Laugh! Laughter actually makes blood flow more efficiently. Artery diameter increases 22 percent during laughter and decreases 35 percent during mental stress, according to a study by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Show gratitude. Write a note to someone who has made a difference in your life. Long-term research has found that individuals who report a high level of gratitude and optimism have a 23 percent lower risk of health-related death.

Most of these are very familiar to readers of The Happy News but when we get stressed we often need a reminder to take a deep breath and focus on what is important. The holiday season is not about perfection (which is the cause of our stress in the pursuit of the perfect holiday) but
about the love that embraced all of our imperfections , accepted them and kept on loving us while guiding us in a path of love for others. So relax in the "greatest love of all" this holiday season: Sing, hug, laugh and be grateful and let the "fa-la-la-la-la's take care of themselves.

I’ve been using this product for about 2 weeks. This is one of Avon’s most expensive skin care products and I have to say that the claims are accurate. I really like how it feel going on and how my skin feels afterwards. I started out just using it as a night time moisturizer but I liked it so much I’m using it in the morning to. The dispenser is handy because it gives you just small amount on the tip of your finger. And you only need a little…. so I’m sure it will last a long time. If you want to try it just for grins, ask for a sample. If you’re serious about doing something great for the face in the mirror order treat yourself to Anew Ultimate Skin Care Elixir.

24K Gold Lipstick
**Ultra Rich 24K Gold Lipstick- This is my new favorite lipstick. The color is rich and the shimmer and shine if there but understated. It’s a winner. Especially at $4.99 a tube.

Sharing a Thanksgiving Recipe

This is great stuff. Make it after Thanksgiving and use it for all your leftover meat sandwiches from now until Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Email or call in a C-25 Avon order on
Black Friday and get a free black eyeliner or mascara. I'm so thankful for each and everyone of you. My Avon customers/friends add a lot of happiness to my life.

Morning Edition, November 21, 2008 · Every year as Thanksgiving approaches, friends ask NPR's Susan Stamberg for her mother-in-law's recipe for cranberry relish. The side dish combines the sweet tartness of cranberries with soothing sour cream — and gets a kick from a little horseradish.
"It sounds terrible but tastes terrific," Stamberg says of the dish — which, if made properly, takes on what many people have called a "Pepto-Bismol-pink" hue.
Despite the color, the relish should remain chunky — not pureed, Stamberg says. To help the flavors meld together, cooks should place the dish in the freezer overnight and remove it early Thanksgiving morning.
Even if it's prepared perfectly, this version of cranberry relish may not suit everyone's taste. "I've developed a very thick skin about this recipe over the years," Stamberg says.
Here's the cranberry relish recipe, along with a bonus recipe for another Stamberg favorite: garlicky cranberry chutney.

Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish
This relish has a tangy taste that cuts through and perks up the turkey and gravy. It's also good on next-day turkey sandwiches and with roast beef.
Ingredients
2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed
1 small onion
3/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar ("red is a bit milder than white")
Instructions
Grind the raw berries and onion together. ("I use an old-fashioned meat grinder," says Stamberg. "I'm sure there's a setting on the food processor that will give you a chunky grind — not a puree.")Add everything else and mix.Put in a plastic container and freeze.Early Thanksgiving morning, move it from freezer to refrigerator compartment to thaw. ("It should still have some little icy slivers left.")The relish will be thick, creamy and shocking pink. ("OK, Pepto Bismol pink.")Makes 1 1/2 pints.

The Man And his Woman. Sorry, Gals, Mr. Dempsey is taken. But his lovely wife, Jillian works for Avon! Look for her get makeup tips in each brochure.

The Happy News Vol. 3 Issue 12
Thanksgiving is almost here and as we count our blessings with family and friends during this holiday season, let's not forget to be thankful for all the things that make us unique and wonderful! It is part of a happy persona to acknowledge the characteristics, talents, skills, traits
that you like about yourself and that make you a unique and valuable person to everyone who enters your world. But guess what? While most of us would say that we are thankful for our unique personal attributes we would also be reluctant to admit that we have many qualities worthy of praise. Well, Happy People, get that idea out of your head right now. As part of counting your blessings this Thanksgiving, I want you to write down at least 25 things that you like about yourself. This may take more than a few minutes but start your list and add things as you think of them. Knowing these things about yourself will make you more confident as you move into the future and face the day to day challenges of life.... it's great to be able to pull out your list when something is getting you down or someone has put you down or maybe you just screwed up (it happens!). Then you will have proof in your hands that you have lots of personal resources to bring to bear on whatever trial is besetting you. Proof that you there is more to you than one negative person's opinion or one mistake you've made. Let me know how many items are on your "25 Things I Like About Me" list by December 3rd and take 25% off one item on your C-25 Avon order.

Happy Days Are Here Again!!!

The Happy News is the 2008 election is history! That's enough to make everyone happy! In my opinion we should be like civilized countries and limit our campaigns to 8 weeks, that would contribute alot to happiness in the USA.

Here are my predictions for the Happiness index for the remainder of 2008. On November 28th we will gather with our families and eat alot, laugh alot and maybe watch a little footbal. Mostly though we will count our blessings... that we have enough and probably more. We can still travel and gather with our loved ones. Grateful that we have family and friends that provide love, support and happy memories to warm our hearts whenever there's a need. From November 29th thru December 24th we will plan and prepare for the Christmas holidays. We'll gather gifts and food and send cards and decorate our homes. We'll get together with friends and wish strangers "Happy Holidays." We'll sing about "Decking the Halls" and "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire." Maybe we'll drop a few extra coins in the Red Kettles or donate some toys or mittens to a local charity so that others can have a better holiday. Some of us might give of our time and help out at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Or make a few extra cookies or rolls for our neighbors or shut-ins that we know. Our happiness quotient always goes up when we help others and when we feel gratitude for our own circumstances. On December 25th we'll gather together again with those we love to celebrate the birth of the One who Loves Us and maybe take a little time to consider our relationship with Him. After "Boxing Day" until December 31st we'll all do as little as possible and maybe spend a little time planning some goals or resolutions for the New Year 2009. I'm never sad to see an old year end even if it has been a good one! The Happiest people have things to look forward to and spend most of their time enjoying life just as it is right now. So enjoy the rest of this lovely autumn, delight in all the sights, sounds, smells and traditions of the coming holidays and keep your heart full of Thanksgiving all the time.

I got a good start on my article and didn't realize my laptop had become unplugged and all of a sudden the screen went black and all my writing was lost!!!!!!! I was so disgusted I just closed the computer and left it for another day. So tonight's work will be to reconstruct my article and get it published. Avon Ladies Find Financial Boost

These Women Pay the Bills Going Door to Door in Recession-Resistant Business

By NANA DUFFUOR

Nov. 7, 2008—

Dawn Parrino never expected to make a living selling cosmetics door to door. Now, after 11 years working for Avon she couldn't be more pleased with the results. Parrino says she originally joined the company to make some extra pocket money.

"I had decided, you know, I need to earn some extra money without compromising what I believe in, being a mother and a parent. And all of a sudden the idea just popped into my head. The name Avon just -- I was like Avon. I'm gonna do Avon."

So for $10 Parrino joined Avon and in one week she pocketed $800.

"I was amazed. I was astonished. I didn't think it could be possible. I thought I'd make just a little extra pocket money and here I was making a significant amount of money."

What began as an attempt to offset some costs at home became the source of funding for her children's private school education, family vacations and even mortgage payments.

The Avon Co. got its start selling perfume in 1886 and has grown into the world's largest direct seller of cosmetics. The company spans the world, with 5.5 million representatives globally, and 500,000 in the United States. These reps, like Parrino, form the heart and soul of the brand.

Zuleyka Puente, a full-time social worker, wanted to earn some extra cash for her wedding in May, so she began working for Avon in her spare time. She says she loved being an Avon representative from her very first sale.

"I love the interacting with the customers. People light up when you go, 'I have your Avon order,'" she said.

To attract new reps and maintain its base, Avon has introduced incentives such as free online sales training, direct access to financial advisers and even gas money.

"With gas prices fluctuating so much, you get a card and they fill it up with money for gas, which is great," said Puente.

The economic downturn has boosted the number of Avon ladies, and although people's budgets are tight, Avon CEO Andrea Jung says the company hasn't taken a hit.

"We're still selling four lipsticks per second, every second of the day, which is incredible! We just came off a quarter where the cosmetic sales were very good all around the world," said Jung.

Asked why people are reining in their spending, but sales are still up, Jung says people still want to take care of themselves, as long as it's for a reasonable price.

"If you look at some of the statistics, when consumers do pull back, cosmetics and personal-care items are some of the last things they give up. The little luxuries, affordable luxuries, especially when there's great value," said Jung.

Given the economic crisis, Jung says now more than ever, being an Avon sales rep provides the perfect opportunity to boost your income. For those who aren't so keen on the idea of going door to door she says the nervousness disappears.

"We hear over and over again, after the first two or three times, you'll be surprised how the nerves go away. You'd be surprised how easy it is, particularly if you're making that kind of money."

Stories like Parrino's and Puente's are what Jung calls "the infamous Avon story."

"For very little money down, you can, in fact, change your life. There's $800, there's women that make six figures. You get as much out of it as you put in. For some people, it's about supplement, additional family income. That's never been more relevant than now."

The Happy News Vol. 3 Issue 10

Campaign 23
Introducing BondGirl 007 Perfume- "Impossible to Resist"

Campaign 23
Introducing BondGirl 007 Perfume- "Impossible to Resist"
"The Times They Are A-Changin' ...."
As we enjoy the change of seasons and look forward to the fast approaching holidays.....it's important to remember that our happiness and feelings of well-being depend on how we react to change; large and small. As the Greek philoshopher said "the only constant is change." Through the annual change of the seasons, the life cycle of plants and animals and even the daily progress of the sun from it's rise to it's setting, we can see that change has been built into the uninvers. Why should it be any different for us? As human beings our power over change is our reaction to it. We can resist change; kicking and screaming and live our lives stressing out and overwrought or we can live in peace, expecting change, accepting each change as it comes; embracing changes that get us excited, promoting change if we're not especially happy with the last change that came along. How do you relate to the changes the come into your life? I've had some big changes in the last two weeks. I applied for a job in my chosen career of child development and was offered the position of "Quality Improvement Specialist" for child care in Pottawattamie County. It's going to be big changes because it's been well over 10 years since I have worked away from home with a 40 hour/week schedule. I started Thurs. Oct 23rd! Just the physical adjustment of setting the alarm and getting to the job on time was a shock to my system but I'm sure I'll get accustom to it soon enough. Houseshold organization is going to be another area of big changes--everyone is going to have to pick up a little more of the household chores to that we can keep the Mahl home running smoothly (everybody eats, has clean clothes and the bathrooms are fit for human habitation...you know the routine). But one thing I am determined is not going to change and that is the service that I provide for my Avon friends and customers. I might have to change my delivery day/time and you might have to wait until evening for me to call you back to take your order but I promise to always make sure you get the best price available at the time you order, that I will provide prompt delivery and that The Happy News will continue.......

Embracing Change: My husband, Bob, will be helping me continue the high level of customer service that you have come to expect from Your 21st Century Avon Lady. It would be so great if you all could make him feel comfortable if he returns calls or make deliveries for me. He's off Tuesday thru Friday so he will be available to help me during that time. He's a nice guy and he likes and uses many Avon products. Recently a customer ordered Wanda, the Halloween Ghost (see photo on my blog) and then decided not to take delivery. I was sharing this with folks I know who really like Halloween to see if I could sell it for my price so that I wouldn't have to send it back. But when he saw it, he said "I kinda like that, can we keep it?" So if you come to my house for Trick or Treat you will be greeted by Wanda. I hope this is a change you can embrace....(Bob is huggable and I don't mind...) it's up to you!!!!!

A new introduction in the men's perfume line coming in C-25 will be Patrick Dempsey's “Unscripted” .

"At the heart of Unscripted is the idea of living your life on
your own terms, and not by a written script. It's about loving what you do, and doing it in your own unique way, rather than being defined by rules."

—PATRICK DEMPSEY
Award-winning actor

Unscripted is a woody green fragrance that expresses the freedom of the open road with fresh, aromatic cardamom and invigorating cracked black peppercorn. At the heart, a sensual mix of fig and crisp lavender enrich the experience with a warm, sophisticated texture. The drydown reveals an unusual twist—a bold blend of exclusive leatherwood and patchouli heart wrapped in earthy vetiver and rich musk for an authentic, adventurous finish.

The Happy News Vol. 3 Issue 9

Enjoying the Game of Life
It has been fun and games at our house lately. Last weekend started with the Council Bluffs Library book sale wherein each family member came home with a big box or bag full of books that we don't really have room for but they were soooo cheap, and so interesting and sooo fun!
One of my purchases was "Become Happy in Eight Minutes"
by Siimon Reynolds. (no it's not a typo his first name has two i's).Here's my 8 second synopsis:
1. Stimulate your Thymus Gland by smiling , tapping on it or putting your tongue in the center of the roof of your mouth.
2. Breath deeply.... fill your lungs clear down to your
diaphraim and exhale slowly.
3. Drink fruit juice.
4. Visualize how you want to be & feel.
5. Move your body as though you were already happy.
Stand tall, put a bounce in your step.
6. Change the focus of your thoughts--- count your blessings

That's it!! Doing all or some of these is enough to improve any bad mood! Pass on to any grouchy relatives!

On Saturday, Lee and I had our semi-annual fun day in Missouri Valley at the Fall Frenzy Scrapaganza. We played with all our scrapbooking toys and paraphenalia, laughed alot and had a great time. If you'd like to learn about a "Score-Pal" or a "Crop-o-dile". We can set up a play dateat Omaha's Scrapbook Store on 72nd by PetSmart.
After the scrap, I was emailing our lovely hostess, Kim Cook from the Scrappin Patch and suggested that next spring we do some mixers to help us get to know all the other scrappers. Well Miss Kim didn't know what "mixers" were. Party games, icebreakers are other names for it. I found a few online and here is a site to find more of them.

"Memories are Made of This"

I love fall!! It makes me nostalgic for the Pennsylvania Falls of my childhood. Big beautiful maple trees on a thousand hills make a spectacular show of color. The Pennsylvania woods have really been the only thing I've ever been homesick for since becoming an Iowan in 1975. This fall is going to be especially nostalgic as we prepare ourselves for our oldest daughter to leave the nest to start her own adventures in life! We spent a little time just today reminiscing about some of the things we did when Jill was a little tyke. We fondly remember those "firsts": first tooth, first steps, first words. Now I'm treasuring up "lasts". The last time we'll do things together when the whole family is living under the same roof; Thanksgiving, Jill's 20th birthday, Christmas. Oh she'll be back to visit and maybe even to live here again if needed but it will never be exactly the same family dynamic again. Reminds me of the scene in "Elizabethtown" when Kristin Dunst squares off her fingers in front of her eye and pretends to take a picture....memories that she wanted to keep... last looks she didn't want to forget. Jill in her apron cooking up something special for us for dinner. Jill sitting on her bed with her guitar practicing. Jill coming home from work all psyched up because ducats were made! Jill backing out of the driveway in the Jeep to take herself to work! (I'm still getting used to that one!) Jill sitting in the living room with knitting needles click away while she watches a favorite movie (probably with Matthew McConahey). Jill all dolled up on her way to a Friday night dance with the Omaha Jitterbugs! Jill harvesting the last tomatoes from her garden. etc, etc. I have to get my camera out and start getting these things recorded just like we did when she was a baby to commemorate all those firsts.
What's happenning in your life this fall that you'll want to make sure you commit to memory? Take some pictures, plan some memory making activities for you and your loved ones so that some fall years from now you'll have happy memories of those you care to shar. There'll be laughter and maybe a tear of joy because you were wise enough to take some time to make happy memories.

An Idea or Two: When the girls were young we kept a family journal for awhile. It was kept on the kitchen counter and everybody wrote in it. It was fun then and has some great family history recorded in it. I've also kept a weather journal off and on over the years and that's an interesting record to look over from time to tome.

Product Reviews

Sincerely Sarah by Sarah Ferguson Warming Neck Wrap. This smells wonderful. When warmed and placed around your neck what a perfect way to unwind after a long day. The only thing that could make it better is if the bulter brought you a nice cup of tea! The Rock and Candle Garden is also nice and would make a good gift for a sister or a girlfriend. The throw is nice too but the description says “oversized” and that might give you the wrong idea. This is for around your shoulders or over you legs and feet, The scented beads in the hidden pocket make it special – great for any queen or princess who doesn't like the chill.
