The Happy News is... cultivating correspondence is a way to make 2 people happy; you and the person
receiving you letter.  I've been reading a book by Alexandra Stoddard called “The Gift of a Letter”. I've been a
fan of Ms. Stoddard's and have read many of her books but this one is a little gem, extolling the virtues of letter
 writing both to the writer and the reader.  This little Happy News page is my personal letter to you each month
and writing it is one of my favorite activities and it is gratifying to me when I hear how much so many of you
 enjoy it!  
Did you ever have a pen pal?  Was letter writing a common activity in your household when you were growing
up?  I have a good friend who lives in Pennsylvania. We've been friends since Jr. Hi. Over the years we have
written letters and talked on the phone and more recently e-mail.  The most satisfying by far is receiving a letter
 in the mail from her.  I have saved lots of them and it is fun to go back and see what was happening in our
 lives over the years.  I correspond a few times a year with my Dad's cousin (also in Pennsylvania).  She's only
 about 10 years older than I am and we sort of keep each other up to date on what going on with our branch
of the family tree.  I have a few college friends that I write too occasionally and that has gotten less frequent
throughout the years but we still exchange letters at Christmas at least.  Writing letters and having an ongoing
 correspondence with friends and family can add a deeper dimension to your life.  Writing down events for
 someone else to read helps you clarify your thoughts and makes the experience more memorable for you. 
Being a letter writer also lets you indulge in the tools of letter writing like pens, paper and stamps. Many of us
left handed, creative people love these kinds of supplies.  And it's fun to collect these items to have on hand
when the letter writing inspiration strikes. It would also be Happy News (or as Alexandra calls them ,
 “Grace Notes”) to have a cozy little corner where you can sit with a cup of tea and have all your letter
writing tools handy to spend time writing letters when ever you feel like it. (I'm working on mine!)  Here are

The Happy News is... Time for some self friendship I think.  It's been a stressful couple of weeks for me. With the car thing and doing our taxes and a few other things, plus all the usual stuff to do and be, I think it's time to take a break --- at least mentally.
To stay happy and balanced, I think it's time for some deep breathing, gentle movement (long walks or yoga stretching) and then some “extravagant lounging”.  For me it would be a nice hot bath with lots of bubbles,, some nice smelling body lotion, a comfy robe and thick warm socks if it's chilly, lots of nice plump pillows on the bed or couch, a scented candle, some soft background music and a good book to read or a blank book to write in.  Then of course a nap with time to wake up slowly and to once again breath deeply and come back to life with more gentle movement. Perhaps then to sit outside for awhile and watch the sky for a bit. That would be my idea of  a day of “extravagant lounging'.  What's yours?

The Happy News is....Staying hydrated not only involves drinking plenty of water but playing in water too. I received this email from my sister Peggy who is sharing quotations from her “Calendar for Women Who Do Too Much” . Today's quote was about “Alone Time” and stated the following: “Women who do too much do it more efficiently, more creatively and better when they take two or three hours completely for themselves once a month. This month, find a way to be in water. Swim, soak in a tub, take a long shower, soak your feet , or even wash dishes by hand – slowly. Let it be known that interruptions are not allowed during these precious times.” This reminds us to be our own best friend. And to be honest if I only had 2 or 3 hours a month to myself... I think I might be nuttier than I am. (but I remember times when “the girls” were babies, that I was lucky to get 5 minutes alone to use the bathroom and I was pretty crazy then. Mercifully I don't remember much about “me” from those days!) It's an individual thing –how much alone time a person needs but for me 2-3 hours a week is more like it. If you are not getting the “alone time” you need to maintain your sanity – maybe a friend can help you set up a plan to share child care or just hold each other accountable for scheduling your weekly/monthly alone time and keeping to your schedule.
